About Course
This course covers the content for Senior 3, Term 1 of the Ugandan National Curriculum, with a focus on the Carbon in Life and Structures and Bonds as the main themes.
Theme 1: Carbon in Life
In this theme, you will explore the diverse range of carbon compounds found in living organisms and natural materials, highlighting their importance in biological processes, industrial applications, and everyday life. From the simplest molecules like methane and ethanol to complex substances like natural polymers and synthetic plastics, carbon’s versatility is evident in both the natural world and the products we rely on. The theme also delves into the various groups of carbon compounds, such as alkanes, alkenes, alcohols, and fatty acids, and explains their role in sustaining life and supporting industrial activities. It also emphasizes the significance of carbon-based fuels, like natural gas and biogas, in energy production, as well as the importance of carbon in creating polymers, soaps, detergents, and other essential products.
Through understanding the structure, properties, and applications of organic carbon compounds, this theme encourages an appreciation of the diverse ways in which carbon influences our environment, health, and technological advancement.
Theme 2: Structures and Bonds
In this theme, You will understand that particles come together in unique ways to form elements, molecules, and compounds, which make up the substances we encounter in daily life. You will distinguish between elements and appreciate the relationships among atoms, molecules, and compounds. Atoms of different elements vary in their subatomic structure, and these differences contribute to the wide variety of substances in nature.
Further more, You will appreciate that atoms join through various bonding processes, forming compounds with distinct properties. Ionic, covalent, and metallic bonds are the key types of chemical bonds that hold atoms together, each with specific formation processes and characteristics. These bonds influence the physical and chemical properties of the resulting substances
